Yarn Count Guide: What Does Ne 30s Mean & How to Choose

If you buy yarn, you have seen numbers like Ne 30s or Ne 20s on specifications. Yarn count tells you how fine or coarse a yarn is — and it directly controls the weight, hand feel and cost of the fabric you produce. This guide explains yarn counts in plain language and helps you choose the right one.

What does Ne mean in yarn?

Ne (English count) is the most common yarn numbering system in apparel textiles. It is an indirect system: the higher the number, the finer the yarn. So Ne 40s is finer than Ne 30s, and Ne 20s is coarser than both.

Single vs plied yarn

A yarn can be single (one strand) or plied (two or more strands twisted together). 20s/2 means two strands of Ne 20s twisted together — a stronger, more even yarn popular for workwear. For suiting, 30s/2 and 32s/2 are common.

How to choose the right yarn count

For knitting

• T-shirts and light knitwear: Ne 30s-40s
• Fleece and heavier knits: Ne 20s-30s
• Socks: Ne 20s-32s depending on the gauge

For weaving

• Shirting: Ne 40s and above
• Suiting: Ne 30s-40s
• Workwear: Ne 16s-24s for durability

Both are indirect systems but different units. Ne 30s ≈ Nm 51. Use the same system when comparing quotes.

How does count affect price?
