Sustainability requirements are now part of almost every apparel RFQ. One of the fastest-growing answers is recycled polyester yarn — commonly called rPET yarn — spun from recycled plastic bottles. This guide explains how it is made, what GRS certification involves, and how to buy it with confidence.

What is recycled polyester yarn?

Recycled polyester yarn starts with post-consumer PET bottles. The bottles are collected, cleaned, crushed into flakes, melted and re-spun into polyester fibre and yarn. The result performs similarly to virgin polyester but gives plastic waste a second life and avoids new resin production.

How rPET yarn is made

1. Collection: post-consumer bottles are gathered and sorted.
2. Flaking: bottles are crushed into PET flakes after cleaning.
3. Melt processing: flakes are melted and extruded into filament or staple fibre.
4. Spinning: fibre is spun into yarn in counts from Ne 10s to Ne 40s.
5. Finishing: yarn is waxed for knitting, package-dyed, or woven into fabric.

What blends are available?

Recycled yarn is available as 100% rPET or blended: rPET + viscose (recycled T/R, e.g. 65/35 or 80/20) gives you the same drape and handle as conventional T/R yarn with a recycled polyester component — ideal for suiting and workwear programs with sustainability targets.

What is GRS certification?

GRS (Global Recycled Standard) is an independent, third-party certification that verifies recycled content, social responsibility and environmental practices along the supply chain. For buyers, GRS provides:

• Verified recycled content — a documented percentage of recycled material
• Chain of custody — traceability from bottle to yarn
• Market credibility — required by many brands and retailers
• Retailer acceptance — easier access to sustainability-driven buyers

How to buy recycled yarn as a buyer

1. Specify the recycled content you need

Decide whether the program needs 100% rPET or a recycled blend such as rPET 65% / viscose 35%. Blends usually cost less than 100% recycled fibre.

2. Ask about certification support

Confirm your supplier can provide chain-of-custody documentation and support GRS certification for your product. Certification is carried out by an accredited body, but a well-organized supplier makes the audit much easier.

3. Order samples first

Recycled yarn should meet the same quality bar as virgin: test count, strength, evenness and shade before committing to bulk.

4. Plan documentation early

For GRS-labelled end products, you will need transaction certificates (TCs) at each step. Start the paperwork when you place the first order, not at shipment.
