When a supplier quotes you yarn, the two most common options are 100% polyester and polyester-viscose blend (T/R). They look similar on paper — both synthetic-based, both economical — but the fabrics they produce are very different. This guide compares them honestly so you can match the yarn to the garment.
What each yarn is
Pure polyester yarn is spun 100% from polyester staple or filament. It is strong, cheap and easy-care, but the fabric can feel plastic-like and wear hot.
Polyester-viscose (T/R) yarn blends polyester with 20-35% viscose (rayon). The viscose adds softness, drape and absorbency — transforming the hand feel of the fabric at a small cost increase.
Head-to-head comparison
| Feature | Pure Polyester Yarn | Polyester Viscose (T/R) Yarn |
|---|---|---|
| Hand feel | Smooth but can feel synthetic | Soft, comfortable, drapes well |
| Moisture absorbency | Very low — wears hot | Moderate (viscose absorbs) |
| Strength | Excellent | Good |
| Pilling | Can pill in knits | Lower pilling at proper construction |
| Dye uptake | Moderate (needs disperse dyes) | Excellent, vivid colours |
| Wrinkle resistance | Excellent | Excellent |
| Cost | Lowest | Slightly higher (viscose costs more) |
| Best for | Linings, technical wear, budget basics | Suiting, workwear, fashion knitwear |
When pure polyester yarn makes sense
- Cost-critical programs where every cent matters
- Linings and technical garments where strength and quick-dry beat comfort
- Industrial textiles that don't touch the skin directly
- Filament applications like sewing threads and mesh
When T/R yarn is the better choice
- Garments worn against the skin — the viscose makes it breathe and feel comfortable
- Suiting and workwear — professional drape and soft handle at a competitive price
- Colour programs — richer, faster dyeing than 100% polyester
- Fashion knitwear — lower pilling and a nicer surface
The price question
Pure polyester is the cheapest yarn per kg. T/R 65/35 adds roughly 10-20% to the material cost, but the finished fabric commands a higher market price and is far more wearable. For apparel programs, the value per garment usually favours T/R.
Frequently asked questions
Is T/R yarn better than pure polyester?
For apparel, usually yes — better hand, drape, absorbency and colour, at a modest cost increase. Pure polyester wins only where price is the sole driver or the fabric won't touch skin.
Does T/R yarn pill less than polyester?
At correct construction, yes. The viscose component changes the surface character and reduces the hard pilling seen in some 100% polyester knits.
Can I dye T/R yarn in bright colours?
Yes — viscose takes dyes readily, giving deeper, more uniform shades than 100% polyester.
