When buying polyester viscose fabric (T/R fabric), the most important specification after composition is weight — measured in gsm (grams per square metre). Getting the weight right decides the fabric's hand, drape, durability and cost. This guide explains what gsm means and which weight to choose for each end use.
What is gsm in fabric?
GSM, or grams per square metre, measures how heavy a fabric is. A 200gsm fabric weighs 200 grams per square metre. For woven fabrics, gsm is set by the yarn count, construction density and weave type — a 250gsm T/R twill uses heavier yarn or denser setting than a 200gsm plain.
Polyester viscose fabric weight ranges
| Weight | Typical Use | Recommended Weave |
|---|---|---|
| 180-220 gsm (light) | Shirts, blouses, linings, light dresses | Plain 1/1 |
| 230-280 gsm (medium) | Workwear, uniforms, trousers, light suiting | Twill 2/1 |
| 280-340 gsm (medium-heavy) | Men's suiting, heavy trousers, outerwear | Twill 3/1, satin |
| 350-420 gsm (heavy) | Winter suiting, jackets, workwear with padding | Twill 3/1, heavy constructions |
How to choose the right gsm
Step 1 — Match weight to the garment
- Shirts and blouses: 180-220gsm plain weave for a crisp, light hand.
- Workwear and uniforms: 230-280gsm twill — durable without being stiff.
- Suiting and trousers: 280-340gsm twill or satin for body and a professional drape.
- Outerwear and winter suiting: 350gsm and above.
Step 2 — Check the blend
T/R 65/35 is the most versatile; T/R 80/20 gives extra strength at lower cost and is popular for workwear. For a softer hand, keep viscose at 35%.
Step 3 — Confirm width
Standard widths are 150cm and 170cm. Width changes the price per metre, so confirm before quoting.
Frequently asked questions
Is higher gsm always better?
No. Higher gsm means heavier, more durable fabric but also higher cost and a stiffer hand. Choose the lightest weight that meets your performance needs.
What is the most popular T/R fabric weight?
For suiting and workwear, 250-320gsm twill is the most ordered range. It balances durability, drape and price.
How accurate is the stated gsm?
Reputable mills hold gsm within ±5%. Ask your supplier for a gsm check certificate with each batch.
Can you produce custom weights?
Yes. We develop custom constructions from your swatch or specification, from light 180gsm plains to heavy 420gsm twills.
